Conceptual understanding

The children in the video clearly demonstrated that they had a deep conceptual understanding of concepts.  The only way to know what are students are capable of doing is to provide them with opportunities for them to demonstrate their knowledge.  I was really blown away by the kids in the video clips understanding of concepts.  Often times students who have a deep understanding of concepts can assist their classmates in understanding concepts. I tell my students all the time that sometimes their peers can help them understand certain concepts that they continue to struggle with.  It is such a rewarding feeling when a student tells me that a classmate showed them how to do a particular problem and they can now explain their thinking correctly to me.  So the student who already understands continues to strengthen his or her skills and the student who was having difficulty not only understands what is going on with the problem but can explain how to solve the problem.
