Common Core
I understand where common core is trying to get, but what bothers me, and as we stated in the class discussion is that these standards are being released and publishers are just creating books to make a quick buck. We are forgetting that these standards need to be massage into the curriculum not just slapped into the classroom. As teachers we are sent to "training's" that are getting us ready for common core teaching but in truth we are just being shown how the standards will fit into the curriculum. We as professionals just need TIME to work with our grade level colleagues to help establish a curriculum that is feasible in the classroom.
I can appreciate the long term idea, but that is it, we need to be patient with the idea that it is going to be long term. Districts need to be patient that the concepts are not going to fill in over night for those students who have large gaps in their math knowledge. I am just hoping that with these modified standards come with some understanding that we as educators are going to need to be given support, and not scrutinized for the effort we are trying to put forth when we are trying to fill the math educational gaps.
I am ready and willing to teach these standards as long as the support and understanding that we have a long road ahead of us.
